Boulder

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
None いわ +

Meaning: Boulder

A mountain stone is probably going to be a really big stone. We’re talking about a boulder here.

This kanji makes a lot of sense. Just follow the logic.

Reading: いわ

The reading is a little bit strange to make a mnemonic of, but think of it this way. You know the word いい right (means good). Do you know the sentence ender わ too? It’s a feminine sentence ender (which you learned briefly about in the gendered language chapter). So, 「いいわ」means “It’s good!”

Just imagine someone has a huge boulder that they’re trying to place in your yard (Japanese gardening, anyone?). They move it and then ask if that’s okay. You say, いいわ! (because you’re a lady who likes gardening, of course).
